About 80% of adults experience a need for chiropractic care for spine pain sometime in their life. Unfortunately, 80% means a lot of us will experience pain that can happen out of nowhere and take us off our feet. While sometimes spine pain can be temporary and minor, ongoing or severe spine pain demands health care. Chiropractic care can often prevent or eliminate spine pain. In fact, it's our specialty.
It's true. Chiropractic care for spine pain is about keeping the spine adjusted properly and then using maintenance and healthy lifestyle changes to retain good health. With chiropractic health care, we don't lean toward surgical intervention whenever there's a problem. Instead, chiropractors manipulate the spinal column to reduce and remove inflammation and nerve impingement as the path toward pain-free health.
A common injury causing spine pain is the herniation of a disc in the spine. The discs are rubbery or spongy pads in between the vertebrae in your spine. These are called intervertebral discs, reflecting their location and purpose. This cushion provides a pivot point, which allows the spine to move from side to side and from front to back without bone-on-bone contact. The disc matter also provides shock absorption for the spine and is a stabilizer for the vertebrae.
When the disk is herniated, it means the jelly-like substance in the disc is protruding out of the disc area. For example, picture a jelly donut you're pushing down on one side and imagine the jelly squirting out. This protrusion can cause major problems with the nerves that come out of the spine and move throughout the body. If a nerve becomes pinched between the disc matter and the bone, you could experience pain and restriction of movement.
When a client with spine pain experiences professional, highly trained chiropractic adjustments, they also receive education regarding home exercises that allow the patient to participate in healing activities and activities, regain pain-free movement and remain flexible. Unfortunately, ignoring spinal pain too long can lead to deeper problems and even permanent nerve damage.
